B's Bieradventkalender Beer #1: Altenmünster Winterbier

There will unfortunately be no Friendly Friday today as I have, frankly, failed to get myself together this week, however I would instead like to introduce you to my husband B, who is making his blogging debut with the following review of his first Frau Dietz Bieradventskalender™ beer: the Altenmünster Winterbier.

"'Winterbier' hardly needs translating, and such a name really says it all: it's an earthy-brown, very smooth and tangy beer ideal for a cold winter's night!

The Altenmünster beers all come in traditional, solid brown bottles with a ceramic swing top that should make a distinctive “plop” sound when you open it - if not, then it’s not fresh.  It should never be drunk from a bottle: when you pour it in a glass, you will see the clear, dark brown colour under a fine, cream-coloured beer foam which will remain for a good while.  The beer smells hoppy and tangy but the best part is the taste: full-bodied, malty and surprisingly fresh for a dark beer.  It leaves a nice, slightly bitter aftertaste that comes with a hint of liquorice.

This is a wonderful beer that I would like to recommend to all who miss the stronger ale beers that you can't get hold of here in Germany.  It’d be perfect after a long, wintery walk in the forest and would go down really well alongside hearty German food like Rindergulasch (beef goulash).  There are only two downsides to my current favourite beer: when you buy a box, you feel the weight of these fancy bottles; and it’s only available at this time of year."

Are these Mr Dietz's words? Be very glad you haven't got my Stevie. He'd just say "That's nice" and leave me to Google it...pah...

Yes, he wrote it all by himself! Although the editor did have a look before it got posted. I wonder how long his review-writing-enthusiasm will last...

(adds that particular beer to the shopping list). My husband is one incredibly jealous man! ;)

A nice bottle of Winterbier should settle him! :)

My favorite local beer is a nice deep brown called Landbier. It has those cool ceramic tops. They pop nearly all the time, although every so often the ring does stick. I love drinking from the bottle. :)

That is a pretty cool calendar.

Thanks, Andrew. I'll have to make a note of your favourite local Bier for if and when we make it round your way. And I love that pop!
